User Guide – Mastitis Recording in IdeasFarm
The Mastitis Recording module in IdeasFarm is designed to clearly and technically document the results of the California Mastitis Test (CMT) and clinical observations for each milking cow.
General Functioning
1. Recording Date
- By default, the current date is displayed.
- If the user selects a past date, the system will automatically show the animals that were being milked on that day.
2. Listed Animals
- Only milking cows for the selected date are displayed.
- Each row corresponds to an animal identified by its ID and name.
3. Quarter Evaluation
Each cow has four columns available:
| Column |
Description |
| FR |
Front Right Quarter |
| FL |
Front Left Quarter |
| RR |
Rear Right Quarter |
| RL |
Rear Left Quarter |
In each column, the CMT result is recorded.
CMT Test Results
The test is classified into 5 grades, associated with the estimated somatic cell count:
| Grade |
Description |
Cell Count/ml |
| 0 (Negative) |
Normal |
Less than 200,000 |
| 1 (Traces) |
Mild subclinical |
200,000 – 400,000 |
| 2 (Moderate Positive) |
Moderate subclinical |
400,000 – 800,000 |
| 3 (Evident Positive) |
Clinical |
800,000 – 1,500,000 |
| 4 (Strong Positive) |
Severe clinical |
More than 1,500,000 |
These values allow the user to differentiate between a normal result, subclinical, or clinical mastitis.
Visual Clinical Diagnosis
- In addition to the CMT, the interface allows marking an animal with a clinical diagnosis when obvious udder inflammation is observed.
- This is done from the Register Diagnosis column.
- Marking this box generates an additional record in the cow’s individual health screen.
- From that screen, treatment can be assigned later.
Recommended Workflow
- Select the date (today or a past date).
- Check the listed animals (those milked on that day).
- Perform the CMT and record the result in each quarter.
- If visible inflammation is detected, mark it as a clinical diagnosis.
- When finished, click Register to save the data.
Practical Tips
- Recording mastitis daily helps maintain an individual and batch history to evaluate herd prevalence and trends.
- Records are automatically integrated with health and treatment modules, avoiding duplicate data.
- This information impacts key indicators such as:
- Milk quality (SCC)
- Herd health
- Treatment costs
Summary
The Mastitis Recording screen is a technical and simplified form where the user enters CMT results by cow and quarter, with the option to mark clinical diagnoses for monitoring and treatment.
