User Guide – Calving Indicators Monitor

Path: Reports → Animals → Calvings → Indicators Monitor

This dashboard concentrates the most relevant reproductive indicators, linking calving events with birth rates, abortions, calf survival, and production projections. Proper use allows evaluating herd reproductive efficiency, anticipating feeding needs, and planning milk production.

1) Key Indicators (top section)

Indicator Definition Formula / Target Usefulness
Calvings in the current period Number of calvings that occurred within the selected date range. - Starting point for evaluating birth rate, survival, and future production.
Abortion Rate (%) Proportion of abortions relative to total registered pregnancies. Formula: Abortion Rate = # Abortions / # Pregnancies × 100
Target:
<3% acceptable
3–5% warning
>5% critical
Detects health, nutrition, or reproductive management issues.
Average age at first calving (years) Average time between a cow's birth and her first calving. Formula: ∑(Age at first calving) / # Heifers
Target: 22–24 months. >30 months = low efficiency.
Measures reproductive precocity and its impact on profitability.

2) Main Charts

Chart What it shows Target / Formula Application / Usefulness
Type of Calvings (pie) Distribution of calvings by condition (normal eutocic, dystocia, cesarean, abortions). >90% should be eutocic. Dystocia >5% → genetic/management alert. Detect obstetric problems and adjust assistance protocols.
Calvings per month (line) Monthly evolution of calvings in the period. - Identifies calving concentration and helps plan milk production curve.
Neonatal Mortality Rate (quarterly) Proportion of calves dying before weaning. Formula: # Calves dead before weaning / Total live births × 100
Target: <5% excellent; 5–10% warning; >10% critical.
Evaluates colostrum quality, calf management, and herd health.
Birth Rate (%) % of reproductive-age cows that calved in the period. Formula: # Calvings / Reproductive-age cows × 100
Target: 85–90% annually.
Global indicator of reproductive efficiency.
Births by gender (bar) Ratio of female/male calves born. Expected target: ≈ 50/50 Planning replacements and male calf management.

3) Projections

Projection Includes / Formula Target / Application
Reproductive Projection (table + chart) Number of lactating animals, projected calvings, drying off, total herd projected, and estimated milk production. Allows anticipating animal load and feeding needs in upcoming months.
Calving Interval (line) Formula: ∑(Days between calvings) / # Cows Target: 380–400 days.
Long intervals reduce lactations per lifetime → review reproductive efficiency.

4) Weaning Survival

Indicator Definition Formula / Target Application
Female / Male Survival (% weaned) Percentage of live-born calves that reach weaning. Formula: Live weaned calves / Live born calves × 100
Target: >95%
Evaluates quality of neonatal management, feeding, and health control.

5) Evolution of Abortion Rate (timeline)

📘 Quick Glossary

🚀 How to Apply This Dashboard in Practice

  1. Monitor abortions and neonatal mortality as alert indicators.
  2. Evaluate birth rate and calving interval to measure reproductive efficiency.
  3. Review calving types and births by gender to adjust genetics and replacement management.
  4. Use projections to plan feeding, drying-off, and milk production curve.
  5. Track monthly evolution of abortions to implement timely preventive measures.
